On March 1st, 2016 the winner of the Sports Clips “The Look Student Edition” contest were announced; and Avalon School of Cosmetology is proud to say that one of those winners was our very own Alejandra Martinez!
Just days before she graduated from the cosmetology program, Alejandra learned that she would be receiving an all expenses paid trip to San Antonio, TX to attend the Sports Clips National Huddle conference!
Alejandra and a school representative of her choice will attend the conference and a banquet; in the meantime Alejandra will have the chance to win products such as Hattori Hanzo shears, and attend master classes.
“I’m actually shocked” said Alejandra about winning “this competition was open to students nation-wide and I am still in disbelief”.
About The Competition
This online competition exclusively for beauty students currently enrolled, or who were enrolled in a certified program between January 15, 2015 and February 25, 2016; who do not yet have a license.
Fortunately for Alejandra her graduation date of March 4th left her just enough time to put her skills to the test.
The competition called for each competitor to upload the transformation of three different male models inspired by popular modern men’s grooming trends and styles.
Alejandra said that she has many family members who also work as stylists and barbers and has always wanted to go into this line of work.
“Once I was in school and we started covering cuts and color I realized that the cuts were what I was able to focus on more easily and that was what was pulling my attention so I ran with it.”
“ I am the most interested in men’s haircuts and grooming, so I knew when I saw the flyer that I had to do something” said Alejandra.
She also said that winning this competition before taking her state board exam gave her the confidence she needed to perform her best on the exam.
Though she and an instructor of her choice will get to go take an all expense paid trip to San Antonio, what Alejandra is the most excited for is the opportunity to keep learning and honing new skills.
“I’m really excited to dial in on my own technique and see what else I can do outside of the classroom, this is a great chance for growth” said Alejandra.
What’s Next?
After winning the competition Alejandra was offered a position at a local Sports Clips where she’ll begin working once she takes the state board exam and receives her license.
“If I could offer students one piece of advice to help them through the program, it would be to learn to see the importance in everything you do. There are always going to be things that you don’t enjoy as much as others, but mastering everything that you do as a stylist will only help you in the future.” Said Alejandra “A true professional takes what they don’t like and finds a way to make it enjoyable”.
She added that if there is something that you want to try, you should do it. “You might surprise yourself, but if you don’t at least try- it will definitely never happen”.
